Oculus: A Trick With Light and Mirrors

Posted on 22:45 by makhya nitni
Oculus - Poster | A Constantly Racing Mind
The term oculus is a misnomer. An oculus is not a mirror, but a round or eyelike opening or design.  The film "Oculus" is just plain deceiving, but in a good way.  Like many recent horror films, the protagonists are a family under siege from a malevolent supernatural force.  Written and directed by Mike Flanagan (“Absentia”), "Oculus," is a suspenseful, scary horror film in the same vein as "Insidious," or "Sinister."  This latest offering from Blumhouse productions is about an ancient mirror that unleashes an evil force in the lives of a typical American family.  "Oculus" follows many of the horror genre tropes that have made Blumhouse productions a household name when it comes to modern family-horror.  Although not necessarily gory, "Oculus" is rated R for the violence and language.  Look for one hour and forty-five minutes of interesting, disturbing, and at times a confusing peek at your normal everyday family haunted by an ancient evil.

Our family, by the name of Russell, comprises of a self-employed software developer, a mom, a redheaded, pre-teen daughter, and a dark haired son who is about two years younger.  Rory Cochran, once a starring cast member of the now defunct "CSI Miami,"plays Alan Russell,  the father, who 11 years previous, allegedly murdered his wife.  The doomed wife and mother, Marie, is played by Sci-Fi star Katee Sackhoff.  Widely known for her role on television's "Battlestar Galactica,” Sackhoff is no stranger to the horror genre.  In 2000, she was in "Halloween: Resurrection," and she started opposite of Nathan Fillion in "White Noise 2," and the more recent "Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia.”  New to American horror movie audiences, but not to "Dr. Who" fans, playing the now grown daughter of this family, is Karen Gillan while Annalise Basso playing the 12 year-old Kaylie.  Rounding off the cast, playing the 21-year-old Tim is Australian, Brenton Thwaites, and American actor Garrett Ryan plays his younger self.

Oculus - Rory Cochran: Kill her! | A Constantly Racing Mind

Now 21 years-old, Tim (Thwaites), is conversing with his psychiatrist, Dr. Shawn Graham played by "Medium" co-star Miguel Sandoval.  Tim has come to terms with demons and recognizes that he is responsible for shooting his father when he was 10 years-old.  His older sister Kaylie (Gillan) is another matter.  Over the past 11 years, Kaylie, was left to cope with the devastation that came to visit their family when their dad, bought an antique, almost grotesque, full-length mirror with an ornate wooden frame.  The mirror is over 300 years-old and once sat in Balmoral Castle in Scotland.  The mirror we are told, has had numerous owners who all have died horrible deaths.

Kaylie's fiancé Michael Dumont (James Lafferty - "One Tree Hill") runs an auction-house and Kaylie has throughout the years been tracking the mirror through its various owners and via the auction-house purchased the mirror on the same day that her brother is being released from the mental hospital as a "cured" individual.  The question of sanity is one that is not only asked by the audience to the characters and events in this film, but the audience may also ask that question of themselves as well.  Memory is a tricky thing, and looking back 11 years and trying to remember certain events in a certain way, is at best circumspect.

Oculus - Karen Gillan & Brenton Thwaites & the Mirror | A Constantly Racing Mind

Setting up cameras and having a rigid plan, Kaylie and Tim venture to their old house where the gruesome death of their mother and their father's murder took place.  The goal is to somehow prove that the mirror is to blame for Alan's death and not Tim.  After carefully reviewing the history of all of the deaths that have been recorded throughout history in relationship to the mirror, Kaylie has a plan that includes hydration, check-ins by the fiancée, and tracking of paranormal activity with the use of plants. Gillan plays Kaylee with determination that is quite obsessive and believable. On the other hand Thwaites, is a little less convincing, but that changes closer to the end.

In telling this story, Flanagan chose to interweave scenes from the past as the two surviving children return to the house they once lived in.  The past unfolds like Stephan King’s "The Shinning," we see a father's quick descent into madness and followed very quickly by the moms, leaving the kids to fend for themselves.  The story is clever, as Kaylie has set up video cameras, à la "Paranormal Activity."  What happens in the house in one night is both predictable, and yet not.  Karen Gillan portrays Kaylie with a solid sense of purpose in defeating the thing in the mirror, and with the help of her brother, hoping show the world that her brother isn't a murderer, but killed their dad in self-defense.  I never got a sense of creepiness from Rory Cochran when he was on "CSI: Miami.”  However, in "Oculus" he portrays the dad, not only the sense of creepy, but also as time goes on, a certain sense of doom and dread.  Like the film itself, Rory plays dad much more subtle in his madness than Jack Nicholson does in "The Shining."  Katie Sackhoff's character Marie, succumbs, like her husband, to the effects of the mirror.  The slow rumble just below the surface, tiny voices in the back of your head with the millions of tiny whisperings play on the character’s minds as well as on the audiences.  The images in the mirror are deceiving and at times confusing.  Katee Sackhoff plays Marie as if she more like Regan in the "Exorcist.”  At times, she raves like a demon when the mirror possesses her.

Oculus - Katee Sackhoff | A Constantly Racing Mind

This is not Flanagan's first trip out with a film about an evil mirror.  In 2005, Flanagan did a short film titled "Oculus: Chapter 3 - The Man with the Plan.”  This short seems to be the seed of what this new and improved film is about.  "Oculus" is more subtle than the 2007 film "Mirrors"starring Kiefer Sutherland.  With "Oculus,"the art of building to a climax is more than the horror that arrives at the end.  That is this film's strength and its weakness.  In trying to build up a climax that hopefully allows the audience to say "Wow."  Although that doesn't quite happen, "Oculus" isn't a total letdown.  The story is almost too clever, but not quite, the acting is solid, and the ending is decent, but not what I was hoping for.  Overall, "Oculus" is worth watching at some point on DVD or Blu-ray.

Review of the Return of Richard B. Riddick

Posted on 00:26 by makhya nitni
Riddick ~ Rising from the depths | A Constantly Racing Mind

"The first crime is becoming civilized."
“Riddick” is clever, smart, funny, brutal, and a careful study of the character that Vin Diesel made famous in the 2000 film "Pitch Black."  Riddick finds our infamous escaped convict in bad shape and looking for a ride home.  Produced by Diesel, and written and directed by David Twohy, this third film depicts Riddick in a different light.  For those who cared less for the first two films won't care much for this episode.  On the other hand, this film is made for those out there who have been clamoring for more of the Furyan, Riddick.
The first film, "Pitch Black" made on a budget of $23 million, made about $39 million domestically and another $13 million in foreign sakes.  The second film, "The Chronicles of Riddick," was epic in nature.  The film had an epic budget of $105 million and a story that spanned several planets and special effects that were also grander in scale.  In spite of the low critic ratings, Twohy and Diesel decided to give the fans something new to chew on.
"There are bad days, and there are legendary bad days. The whole damn planet wants a piece of me."
The bridge between "The Chronicles of Riddick" is detailed in the first 15 minutes.  Choosing to narrate the sordid details of his fall from the throne of the Lord Marshal, Riddick reminds me of a down and out gumshoe from a detective novel. Why not, he was left for dead with a broken leg on a desert planet.  He fixes his own leg (by re-breaking it - and he even puts in his own screws to keep the bone in place) and makes friends with the CGI created local wild dog-like creatures.  It's an animal thing.  There is a humane and playful side to Riddick.  There is also the ruthless and brutal side as well.  Like "Pitch Black," "Riddick" stays on one planet and deals with the deadly creatures this planet has to offer.

Riddick ~ Dahl kicks ass | A Constantly Racing Mind

After finding a tin shed in the middle of nowhere, the place turns out to be a mercenary/bounty hunter outpost.  The place is a rest stop and is open to all Marcs.  Riddick sends a beacon and lets all who cares know that he is on the planet: Richard B. Riddick, murderer.  The first to arrive are Santana (Jordi Mollà - "Knightand Day") and his crew of bounty hunters that seem to be Hispanic characters from the "Wild Bunch," or "The Three Amigos.”  The second to arrive is a more organized group of bounty hunters -- they have matching uniforms and badges.  They are led by Boss Johns -- yes the father of William J. Johns, the bounty hunter from "Pitch Black.”  Second in command is badass Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") as Dahl.  The two crews totals 11 against Riddick, not fair, you say?  You are correct, it is unfair, and the crew needs to double that number to make it a fair fight.

The lull before the storm comes near the middle of the film where we have to put up with the two crews squabbling for the right to kill Riddick and Dahl kicking Santana's ass a few times, we find the two crews forming an uneasy alliance in order to take on Riddick.  The fact of the matter is, Diesel and Twohy decided to return to the core story in "Pitch Black" so that they can reboot their own franchise.  In fact, the scene where the surviving bounty hunters are about to decide Riddick's fate, chained and subdued, he tells Johns the tale of how his son met his fate.  Same number of crash survivors, deadly creatures outside on a dark and rainy night.  The similarities are as striking as the differences in the two films.  Once again, Riddick is in chains, both time held by man with the last name of Johns.  Both times, he clangs the chains and makes menacing predictions of their fates.

Riddick ~ A Furyan and his dog | A Constantly Racing Mind

The differences are in directing styles, and in the amount of time that Riddick's character is built into something more than your usual anti-hero trope.  The man is lonely, he is homesick, he is humane to animals that are friendly to him, and he is utilitarian in how he goes about killing all who threatens him.  The two are working, not only to move to more sequels but to making this vicious character into something more likable or at least understandable.  The action scenes are fun, and paced out throughout the film.  There are new types of space ships and the now familiar motorcycles that were popularized in the "Star Wars" films, and seen similar models in "Priest" and in "Star Trek."  The creatures on planet M-334/G were nocturnal Raptor-like creatures while on this Not-Furya planet, they are weird looking, and water bound, snake-like, venomous scorpion creatures.

"Leave God out of this, he wants no part of this!"

While Riddick is main character, the members of the bounty hunter crews help support to build the atmosphere as Santana's crew know of and fear Riddick's reputation.  While on Johns' crew, Dahl is the big standout.  Although Dahl states emphatically that she doesn't do men, her inner – Starbuck character stands out.  Musically, the film is reminiscent of "Pitch Black" in many ways.  Graeme Revell who wrote the original score for "Pitch Black" writes new music but weaves familiar themes back into this film.

Riddick ~ Richard B. Riddick | A Constantly Racing Mind
This is an action film at the basic core.  The story is not as deep as in "The Chronicles of Riddick,” there is no need to delve into the concept of the Underverse and how one transcends into Necromonger Nirvana.  By the way, Karl Urban reprises his role as Lord Vaako, only briefly in the beginning of the film.  This story is not as complex and the jokes are cheap and usually at Dahl's expense.  For action-film buffs this is standard fare and is a welcome break, for non-Riddick fans, this film is definitely forgettable.  However, for the rest of us who have been waiting for Riddick's return, this is another Vin Diesel film in my collection.

In Theaters September 6th, 2013.

Riddick - Banner - 0005 | A Constantly Racing Mind

Riddick takes on not only mercenaries, but he also takes on some bizarre creatures.

"The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy."

Here is a a new three minute long, rated R trailer.

More action, more swearing, more killing, more Ridick (Vin Diesel). Taken captive by Mercs, The SHTF and hunters become the hunted. The logical thing to do? Release the Furyon and let him do his thing. The creatures seen in the trailer look somewhat familiar, reptilian in nature. The film also stars "Star Trek Into Darkness's"  Karl Urban and Katee Sackhoff from "Battlestar Galactica".

Riddick Rule The Dark ~ New Poster | A Constantly Racing Mind

Riddick - Fear the Dark | A Constantly Racing Mind

Above is the new poster of the Furyian, Riddick, with the movies tag line "Rule the Dark."

Here is a a new international Trailer to feast your eyes upon.

Here is the synopsis:
"The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. Director David Twohy, responsible for directing 2000's "Pitch Black,"  and 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick," and the 1996 Charlie Sheen film "The Arrival."  Which, I actually kind of liked.

David Twohy is also know for his script writing capabilities as well. In 1989 he penned the script for the Julian Sands and Lori Singer time traveling witch story, called "Warlock." In which Twohy has Sands rip a mans tongue out with his teeth and throw it onto a hot skillet. 1994 Twohy wrote the screen play for the Charlie Sheen and Nastassja Kinski film "Terminal Velocity." Twohy was on hand for adapting the Danielle Alexandra story into a script for the Demi Moore film, "G.I. Jane" in 1997. It was in 2000 when Twohy worked with the Wheat brothers and came up with the script for the Sci-Fi cult flick, "Pitch Black," which unleashed Riddick the Furyian to all the known worlds. In 2004, Twohy wrote and directed the epic "The Chronicles of Riddick" which introduced Karl Urban to the "Riddick" Underverse as Lord Vaako.

Riddick is back! And he looks just as bad-ass as ever in this new trailer for his new film. Here is the synopsis:

Riddick Is Back!

Posted on 08:26 by makhya nitni
With a new photo comes an announcement about what the new chapter of the Riddick chronicles will contain.  From Universal Pictures comes this announcement about the plot.

"...The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty."

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

Riddick also sees the return of Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Bourne Supremacy) as Vaako and introduces to the series Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II, Colombiana) as Santana, the arrogant captain of the mercenary ship; Matt Nable (Killer Elite) as Boss Johns, a man looking for answers; Katee Sackhoff (TV's Battlestar Galactica) as the Nordic mercenary Dahl; and Bokeem Woodbine (upcoming Total Recall) as bounty hunter Moss. Rounding out the cast are Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), Nolan Funk (TV's Aliens in America) and two-time Grammy Award-nominated singer Keri Hilson."
