Although Fitzgerald is telling us a story about love and rejection, on a different, darker level, he is telling us a tale of decay and decadence. Perhaps this is the perfect time for this classic story returns to the minds of the American people. For many years just the name Gatsby always had the connotation of opulence and decadence. Now that the United States has just come through a recession due to a certain amount of financial decadence, we head into a new era of social and moral renewal. The world is a point where technology is racing ahead, faster than our souls can keep up. We have new opportunities for the younger generations to make money with the new leaps in technology. The question we all must ask ourselves is with this new technology, will the American people realign their goals to focus on discovery, individualism, and the pursuit of happiness, or, will we allow ourselves to slip into a some sort of decay.
